FAQs

Why should you see an orthodontist?

An orthodontist has received two to three years of additional specialized training beyond dental school. When you choose a specialist, you are choosing an elevated level of expertise and care for your family. It isn't just about getting straight teeth, or “buying braces.” When you see Dr. Diane, you’re benefitting from her experience, and a level of customer service that is important in your investment. What's the best age to visit the orthodontist?

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children first visit an orthodontist around the age of seven to eight. Even if no treatment is indicated at that age, you can be assured of having a great baseline. Common Orthodontic Problems

Orthodontic treatment is not exclusive to children and teens. About 40% of our patients are adults. Whether you’re considering treatment for yourself or for a child, call for your complimentary exam and find out about your options. You're never too old to get better dental health. Would you stop seeing your eye doctor if you’re 70? A great bite and smile is a lifetime benefit.

If I get braces, how long do I have to wear them?

The amount of time spent in braces varies depending on the degree of correction. Treatment times can be as short as six months, but most average treatments last about 18 months.

Do braces hurt?

You may feel some discomfort for a few days as your teeth, gums, cheeks, and mouth get used to your new braces. This is normal and expected, but if you follow our Comfort Recommendations, you will adjust well.

Do I need to brush my teeth more often if I have braces?

Brushing at least two to three times a day keep your teeth, gums, and mouth healthy and clean. Brushing regularly helps remove food that may be caught between the braces.

You should also floss once a day to clean where your brush isn’t able to reach. We are happy to show you how to brush and floss properly once your braces are placed.

If I have braces, do I still need dental checkups every six months?

Yes! It’s even more important that patients in braces visit their dentist regularly. With braces, solid homecare can help fight off bacteria responsible for gum disease and cavities. Some patients even see their dentist more frequently - this is always encouraged! Dr. Diane will work closely with your dentist to make sure your teeth stay clean and healthy while you’re wearing braces. Just ask if you ever need review of techniques.

Will my braces interfere with my school activities like sports, playing an instrument, or singing?

Playing an instrument or a contact sport may require some adjustment at first, but wearing braces will not stop you from participating in any of your school activities. If you play a contact sport, it is recommended that you wear a mouthguard to protect your braces or appliance.

How do I schedule my next appointment?

If you are in treatment, please be sure to schedule your next visit before you leave. This will not only ensure your progress continues smoothly, but also helps to get the appointment time that works best for your schedule. If you are a new patient or have been referred to our practice, simply call us! We look forward to meeting you!
